It was Wacky Tacky Day here at the middle school, and it was fun to see all of the crazy clothes students wore. Unfortunately, I forgot to get pictures!
Much has happened in 6A since Spring Break, so it's about time for an update.
Theme - The unit we are currently focused on is called Global Awareness. Students are learning about what it means to be a global citizen and to be aware of the critical issues happening in our world. Students have discovered that poverty is at the root of many of our world's problems, and that it can be caused by so many different things such as the physical environment, corrupt governments, and poor economies. The goal is to help students understand the poverty cycle, and our role as Christians in helping people break that cycle and find ways to meet their basic needs.
Market Day - This is a project that fits incredibly well with the essential questions students are exploring in our Global Awareness unit. One way to help people living in poverty is to provide small loans that they can use to start a business. Studies have shown that people are much more likely to pay back a small loan than a large one. Students are learning what it takes to start a business and to create a product that people will want to buy. The proceeds from Market Day will go to a financial aid organization that provides microloans to people trying to break free from the poverty cycle.
Math - Our Data Analysis Unit is providing students with the knowledge they require in order to conduct surveys for Market Day and to come up with plans for creating and developing products. Students will then use techniques learned in Math to create graphs and make conclusions from their survey results. The goal is to help students make wise financial decisions and find ways to make the most profit.
Language Arts - We started a Poetry unit this week and students overall seem very enthusiastic. It's great to see them so proud of their writing, and excited to read it in front of the class.
